Brief history of your character (100-200 word minimum):
Nell was born in Ireland about 1842. When she was still a very small child, her family emigrated from hunger-stricken Ireland to the United States. She grew up in Cape Cod. Her father was a day labourer and she had several brothers and sisters. When she was ten years old, her father ran off with a barmaid. A year later, when Nell was eleven, her mother, two of her brothers and a sister died of cholera. Nell, her brother Jamie and her little sister Tess were sent to the Barnstable County Poor House. There little Tess died of diphtheria (and Nell still blames herself for that, thinking there should have been something she could have done).
When Nell was 16, still living at the Poor House, her brother Jamie introduced her to a man named Duncan. She was smitten immediately by his charm and handsomeness, though she knew that he was a petty thief, just like her brother. He told her he were to get a regular job, and within a month they were married, which also meant Nell was finally able to leave the Poor House.
Duncan continued with the small crimes he did, also teaching Nell how to pick pockets, expecting her to bring home her share of the family income. Nell became good at it, but kept trying to convince him to get a job at a shipbuilder's. One day he snapped and that was the first time he hit her. From that point on, she suffered constantly from his often drunken abuse, jealousy and controlling behavior. Duncan finally decided his small crimes didn't pay off enough and robbed a jewellery store, maiming the owner in the course of it. Nell found out the next day, when the police was already on Duncan's tracks. She decided to leave him now and told him so. He freaked out and although she told him she was pregnant he beat her, raped her and cut her with a knife, causing her to miscarry. Duncan was arrested, but Nell nearly died of infection from an incomplete miscarriage. A physician named Dr. Greaves saved her and took her into his home.
Duncan was convicted to thirty years in prison. Nell petitioned the Church for an annullment of the marriage, but this was refused, so she is still married to Duncan.
Nell lived at Dr. Greaves house for four years. She helped him with his work and he taught her in various subjects. Later they also became intimate. As she never conceived during this time, she believes she can never have children due to the after-effects of the miscarriage.
When Nell was 22, she accompanied Dr. Greaves to the delivery of the baby of a maid named Annie who worked for the Hewitt family, a very wealthy Boston family. As the baby's father was not Annie's husband, who had been away at the American Civil War for a long time at this point, Annie gave the child up for adoption. To many people's surprise the little girl named Gracie was adopted by Viola Hewitt, the mother of the family, who had just lost two of her sons, Robbie and Will to the war. As Viola could see how well Nell did with little children, she asked her to become Gracie's governess. As far as Viola knew Nell was a virtuous - single - Irish Catholic girl from a working class background who was good with children. Dr. Greaves did not betray her past either. Nell believed that Gracie would be the only child she would ever be able to take care off and gladly accepted Viola's offer. So Nell moved to Boston to stay with and work for the family.
Four years later, in 1868, the family was surprised by the news that Will Hewitt, one of the sons believed to have died in the war, has turned up and has been arrested on charges of murder. Viola Hewitt begged Nell to look into the case and help Will, as she herself could not do so. So Nell met Will Hewitt, very much alive, but having turned from former surgeon to opium-addicted gambler in the course of the past years, after-effects of the horrors of the war. Nell managed to help prove Will's innocence and became friends with him.
In the course of the next years Nell, most often assisted by Will, looked into the deaths of several other people, being asked to do so by the family and friends. This was sometimes a very dangerous undertaking, as both Nell and WIll were once nearly killed by a madman turning out to be the murderer. During that case Nell also met Duncan again, who had kept writing her letters, begging her to visit him at prison. In the course of that investigation, Will also learned that she is married to Duncan.
Nell's relationship with Will remained complicated. They became good friends and spent a lot of time together, also due to the fact that it turned out that Will was Gracie's real father. Spending so much time together started rumors, and Nell and Will decided to announce a sham courtship, so no one would question the propriety of their contact.
They are actually in love with each other, but Nell - not being able to remarry due to being married to Duncan, which still only Will and Dr. Greaves know about - does not want to risk an affair in fear of losing her position as a governess and therefore Gracie who she considers the child of her heart.
In January 1870 Will left with the intention of travelling to Shanghai. Right before his departure, Nell and Will kissed for the first time, but Nell still knew that they could not become lovers for real. So Will took the train to San Francisco with plans to sail to China, leaving Nell behind in Boston.
Brief synopsis of your character's personality (100 word minimum):
Nell is an intelligent woman, a hard worker with a strong stomach which helped her in assisting Dr. Greaves in his work, as well as in staying calm when looking into murders. People easily have confidence in her and she is easy to talk to. According to Dr. Greaves she is one of those people who manage with hard work to make their own life better.
Nell is Catholic and doesn't want to question the rules the Church makes for her, wanting to find stability in religion and leave her old life behind, saying she does not trust her own judgement after having married Duncan.
Nell is compassionate and has a hard time saying no when people close to her ask her for something. She is a loyal friend, also in very critical situations. Most important to Nell is Gracie and with everything she does she fears risking her position as a governess and therefore being able to take care of her.

Where: Park
When: Early afternoon
When Nell woke up, she blinked several times, for the sun was blinding her. The grass underneath her was soft, and the first thing she wondered was when she had laid down here in the park. She had gone for a walk after having put Gracie to bed for her afternoon nap, Eileen ready to watch her, but she certainly hadn't planned to take a nap for herself.
Getting up and looking around, she realised that this wasn't a park she knew in Boston, and certainly none she had walked to today. What had happened? Glancing down, she saw something lying on the ground next to her. She picked it up and saw that it was a map, showing buildings and indicating a certain one. She also found a key lying on the ground that seemed to belong to the map, having the same label. Nell wondered what kind of riddle this was. Why had she come here and what was the matter with the map?
Pondering she retried to recall events that had brought her to this place, but nothing came to her else than what she had already remembered. She started to walk through the park, watching out for any familiar sign. But there was nothing; this place was entirely unfamilar to her.
